Soundkeeper

The Soundkeeper embodies a powerful idea: Restoring and protecting the environment requires constant vigilance.

Long Island Soundkeeper Bill Lucey plays that vital role on the water. A watchdog, doing what’s possible only through direct contact: patrolling the Sound’s waters, engaging with you, the public, spotting new opportunities for restoration, and finding and stopping pollution with the help of our legal team.

The Soundkeeper is more than a dedicated and passionate individual; he manifests a way of thinking about how to best protect waters, fisheries, and wildlife. It’s an approach that involves all whose lives and livelihoods are touched by Long Island Sound—volunteers who get their hands dirty cleaning beaches, children learning about the Sound, fishers who depend on healthy habitats, legislators who pull the levers of policy, and concerned citizens who hold polluters accountable.

The Soundkeeper works hand-in-hand with the Save the Sound program, legal, and legislative staff across Connecticut and New York to mobilize the public, enforce the highest environmental standards, and be Long Island Sound’s voice when legislators and agencies decide policy.
