The Save the Sound team is devastated by the news that our colleague and friend Melissa Schlag passed away on Friday.
Melissa has been an integral part of our communications, climate, and lands teams at Save the Sound for four years, bringing her quick mind and sharp wit, turn of phrase, and political acumen to every project she touched. Her conviction, curiosity, and willingness to share her deep knowledge made Melissa a natural convener in her work with youth climate activists and a mentor to our policy and global interns.
Even in the face of illness, Melissa continued to dedicate herself to a rigorous schedule of environmental advocacy, civic involvement, home renovation, and international travel. It was clear to anyone who encountered her that she put 100% of herself into all her passions. As her teammates, we could see and feel Melissa directing a powerful current of support, care, and appreciation for her fellow staff.
Melissa previously served as First Select of Haddam, helped lead opposition to the “Haddam Land Swap,” and was a longtime layout editor of The Haddam Bulletin. In everything, she was a fierce and tireless advocate for the environment, for transparency, and for free speech.
Melissa’s sense of humor, energy, and devotion are unforgettable.
It was an honor and true pleasure to work with her. Her passing leaves a hole in the heart of our Save the Sound team.
