PRESS RELEASE: Climate Action Week 2024 Kicks off on Earth Day

Hartford, CT – Advocates will gather across the state next week in celebration of Climate Action Week, an initiative of the Connecticut Coalition for Climate Action. Climate Action Week aims to raise awareness and provide opportunities for concrete action on climate change, sustainability, and resilience in Connecticut. Climate Action Week events will include: 

Sunrise Climate Emergency & Youth Advocacy Day 

Earth Day Press Conference 

  • What: The CT Coalition for Climate Action, Sunrise Connecticut, and legislators from the Environment Committee will speak in support of HB 5004, the CT Climate Protection Act, and section 7 of HB 5213, which supports free bus passes for students, and voice opposition to “Project Maple,” proposal that would expand the capacity of the Algonquin Gas Transmission Line.  
  • When: Monday, April 22, 10am-10:30am 
  • Where: Room 2D of the Legislative Office Building, 300 Capitol Ave, Hartford 
  • Hosted By: Rep. David Michel, CT Coalition for Climate Action, and Sunrise CT 
  • Who: Speakers will include

  • Alex Rodriguez, environmental justice specialist with Save the Sound and member of the Connecticut Coalition for Climate Action

Social Media Action Day

Student Climate Poster Competition 

  • What: In recognition of prioritizing climate education, the CT Coalition for Climate Action is hosting the 2024 Climate Poster Competition for students grades 5-12 from participating schools. Join us to vote for your favorite and get a treat. 
  • When: Wednesday, April 24, Voting from 12-2pm, Winners announced at 2:30pm by Representative Christine Palm   
  • Where: CT Capitol, Capitol South Lobby at the top of the escalator, Hartford, CT

  • Who: Semi-finalists of the poster contest include students from Bristol, Prospect, and Enfield. 

Hold Down the Ropes for Climate Action 

  • What: Advocates will join together to “hold the ropes,” or stand behind the designated rope areas at the State Capitol and ask legislators exiting or entering the Senate or House chambers to support key environmental bills this session 
  • When: Wednesday, April 24, 2:30-4:30pm 
  • Where: Legislative Office Building, 300 Capitol Ave. Hartford, CT

Climate, Coffee, and Conversation with Representative Eleni Kavros DeGraw 

  • When: Saturday, April 27, 9-10:30am 
  • Where: Little Oak Cafe, 220 Albany Turnpike Building 10, Canton, CT 
  • Hosted by: Connecticut League of Conservation Voters

The CT Coalition for Climate Action comprises environmental advocates, health experts, labor and municipal representatives, and others advocating for climate action in Connecticut. Formed in 2023, the Coalition’s central demand is that Connecticut keep its promise to cut climate pollution and protect our future. Members of the coalition’s steering committee are American College of Physicians – CT Chapter, ConnPIRG, Conservation Law Foundation, CT Health Professionals for Climate Action, CT League of Conservation Voters, Environment Connecticut, Interreligious Eco-Justice Network, Mitchell Environmental Health Associates, People’s Action for Clean Energy, Save the Sound, Sierra Club CT, and the Nature Conservancy in CT.
