Attention bird loves, nature lovers, students and responsible citizens: Save the Sound is looking for volunteers to serve as Cleanup Captains in the upcoming International Coastal Cleanup 2016. Save the Sound is the Connecticut State Coordinator for the International Coastal Cleanup, the largest one day marine cleanup on record!
Cleanup Captains help coordinate the cleanup in their community including registering volunteers on the day of the cleanup, orienting volunteers and provide them with needed supplies like gloves, data cards and trash bags supplied by Save the Sound via the Ocean Conservancy. Cleanup captains need to collect data cards at the end of the event, write up the results from the data cards and return supplies to Save the Sound. Still curious? Please read our 2016 Cleanup Captains Manual to learn more.
We are looking for captains in the following towns: Bridgeport, Darien, Greenwich, Norwalk, Shelton, Stamford, Stratford, Westport, Enfield, Clinton, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Branford, East Haven, Guilford, Madison, Milford, New Haven, West Haven, East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, New London, Norwich, Old Lyme, Stonington, Waterford, and Pomfret.
Every September for more than 30 years, the international Coastal Cleanup has motivated over 11.5 million people from around the world to pick up over 210 million pounds of trash from nearly 390,000 miles of shoreline. Last year we, here at Save the Sound, finished with an astounding 58 cleanups with over 1,500 volunteers, 6,500 pounds of trash, and 45 miles of waterfront. But there is still so much more that can be done. It is a unique event in that all garbage that is picked up is tallied on Data Card that are analyzed by the Ocean Conservancy to help fight marine debris. Each year about 5 to 12 million metric tons of plastic that are washed offshore both destroying our beaches and killing about 100,000 marine creatures and about 1 million sea birds; we need your help.
If you or your organization are interested in becoming a Cleanup Captain please contact Save the Sound’s ICC Coordinator Dana Monz at dmonz@savethesound.org or 203.787.0646 ext. 136 so we can get the ball rolling and clean our beaches. To learn more about Save the Sound and the International Coastal Cleanup please visit our webpage. Not only is this event important in helping to clean our local beaches, but it also acts as a good opportunity for teaching about what is the most pressing issue of the 21st century – Climate Change.
We hope to hear from you soon!
Best,
Dana Monz, ICC Coordinator, Save the Sound
